{\noindent Dear Mike:}
Under separate cover, we are sending you: 1) The December 1981 preliminary
draft of ``The WEB System of Structured Documentation'' by Donald E.
Knuth, and 2) A 9-bit non-labeled magnetic tape written in ascii at 1600
bpi, lrcl 133, blksize 7980, recfm FBA, containing the following files:
TANGLE.PAS, TANGLE.WEB, WEAVE.WEB, WEBHDR.TEX, and BASIC.TEX.
The hard-copy report was written in WEB and prepared for printing through
the use of the WEAVE program and of TEX. Appendices to this report
contain the complete WEAVE-produced listings of TANGLE and of WEAVE
itself. Appendix G, on page 176, outlines the procedure that may be
necessary to install the WEB system on your computer.
An attempt has been made to make TANGLE and WEAVE reasonably system
independent but some system dependencies still remain. The modules that
may require attention are listed in the indices on page 103 and page 170
in the documentation under ``system dependencies''.
The TANGLE.PAS file is in upper case, broken into lines not exceeding 72
characters per line at PASCAL-acceptable places. The only concession to
readability is that the breaks are made after semicolons when this is
possible.
WEBHDR.TEX is the WEB header file that contains specific formatting
information needed by TEX to process the output from WEAVE. The last file
is the usual BASIC.TEX.
Thanke you for volunteering to act as site coordinator for Multex on the
Honeywell level 68 and for agreeing to mail us a check for \$125 to cover
the expenses of making and sending this and other tapes. Please let me know
how you fare in getting the WEB system up on your computer.
